We talk a lot about the next generation of leaders. We want their ideas, their energy and their ability to imagine differently. Yet when young people and young organisations reach for opportunities that would allow them to actually lead, one requirement appears again and again: experience.

It is a reasonable expectation. Leadership carries responsibility, and trust should not be given blindly. But there is a paradox we rarely confront: to access an opportunity, you need experience; to gain experience, you first need an opportunity.

So where does someone new begin?

Então, por onde começa alguém novo?

We speak enthusiastically about youth-led organisations and locally led development. Yet this tension remains particularly visible in civil society and development. Opportunities intended to strengthen emerging organisations often require years of existence, previous grants, established systems and evidence of comparable work. Each requirement may be perfectly reasonable on its own. Together, they can make the first meaningful opportunity remarkably difficult to reach.

If every meaningful opportunity requires someone to have already received a meaningful opportunity, we are not identifying potential anymore. We are recycling access.

Estamos a reciclar o acesso.

The answer is not lower standards. It is better pathways.

A resposta não é baixar padrões. É criar melhores caminhos.

New leaders need opportunities where responsibility is real, accountability remains high and experience can actually be built. Because every institution with twenty years of experience once had one. Every organisation with an impressive funding history once had none. Every experienced leader was once inexperienced.

Someone had to trust them before the evidence was complete.

Alguém teve de confiar neles antes de a evidência estar completa.

I do not believe the future needs to be built by young people alone, nor that generational change requires one generation to leave the room for another to enter. Experience still matters. There is knowledge that only time produces, and younger leaders do not need to repeat mistakes that previous generations have already made.

A experiência continua a importar.

Perhaps the more useful model is not replacement, but coexistence: experienced leaders who are secure enough to share power, and younger leaders humble enough to learn without surrendering their ability to question. One generation can tell us how we arrived here; another may ask whether here is still where we want to be.

And that distinction matters because participation is not the same as leadership. Being invited into the room is not the same as having influence inside it. Being given a microphone is not the same as being given responsibility. We can keep calling young people "the leaders of tomorrow", but at some point tomorrow has to become today.

We spend a great deal of time asking whether young people are ready to lead.

Perhaps there is another question we should be asking:

Talvez haja outra pergunta que deveríamos fazer:

Who is willing to let them lead?

Quem está disposto a deixá-los liderar?
